Hurricane season officially begins on June 1, and travel insurance can offer valuable protection if tropical storms or hurricanes disrupt travel plans.
Coverage can include trip cancellation, interruption, missed connections, and delays—but it’s important to review the details of your policy, as benefits can vary.
Please keep in mind that hurricane coverage must be purchased before a storm is named.
In general, trip cancellation and interruption coverage may apply when:
- Severe weather causes your common carrier to stop service for at least 24 consecutive hours.
- A natural disaster makes your accommodations uninhabitable.
- Mandatory evacuation is ordered at your destination due to a hurricane or other natural disaster. (Note: You must have 50% or less of your trip remaining when the evacuation ends to qualify for cancellation.)
- Trip delay results in you missing 50% or more of your scheduled trip due to a covered reason—such as weather-related carrier delays. (Available on the Pro Plus Plan only)
Be sure to purchase your policy early and review all terms carefully to ensure you’re fully protected this hurricane season.
FAQ
Can my clients insure concert tickets?
Yes, in some cases — if a concert is included as part of a broader travel package, such as a tour that bundles transportation, accommodation, and event tickets, and is sold by a travel agent, it may be considered part of a travel arrangement.
In most cases, however — attending a concert on its own, without being part of such a package, would not typically be classified as a travel arrangement.
Overcoming Objections: I don’t need travel insurance. We don’t plan to cancel our trip.
No one ever plans to cancel a trip — but life happens.
We can’t always predict the unexpected, which is why travel insurance exists: to help protect your investment when things don’t go as planned.
When speaking with travelers, share a real-life example. Think of a client who declined coverage, only to face a sudden situation that forced them to cancel — but by then, it was too late to buy insurance.
These stories are powerful and help travelers understand the true value of coverage.
And remember, travel insurance isn’t just about cancellations. It can also provide vital support during the trip — whether it’s a medical emergency abroad, a lost or delayed bag, or other unforeseen disruptions.
